Installation Information

Thank you for choosing Milgard® windows and patio doors for your project! Installation of windows and patio doors is not a recommended DIY (do-it-yourself) project. Please consider retaining a professionally licensed (where required) contractor to install Milgard windows and patio doors. 

Below are some common topics related to installation information that may be helpful for your project.

Installation

Milgard Windows must be installed level, plumb, square and weather-tight in their opening following AAMA-2400-20 (new construction applications) or AAMA-2410-13 (replacement applications). Applicable CPSA Certificate of Compliance is available at milgard.com/cpsa

Before Install

  1. Fully inspect product(s) prior to installation. Do not install nonconforming or damaged products.
  2. Store windows and doors on flat surface. Do not lean against a corner or at an angle. Support the entire length of the sill so that it remains flat. Keep sash locked.
  3. Store windows and doors out of direct sunlight in a clean, dry, low-traffic area protected from the elements. If stored in a trailer or container, leave door fully open to allow for ventilation.
  4. Do not lift by top of frame only.
  5. Protect sills from traffic and damage.
  6. Provide FULL support under window and door sills.

During Install

  1. Close and lock window and door sliding panels.
  2. Reseal all outside joints of mechanically joined frames.
  3. Install level, plumb, and square.
  4. Framing clearance on all windows sides and jamb and header of the door shall be ¼”. Door sills may rest on the sill support.
  5. Use corrosion-resistant fasteners that are compatible with product material.
  6. If insulation foam is needed, it must be the low expansion type that meets AAMA 812.

Improper installation is the greatest cause of window and door malfunction. Damage or defects caused by improper installation, storage, handling, or maintenance are not covered by the MILGARD Warranty.

Safety & Handling

Window and door installation is not a recommended do-it-yourself project. Please consider retaining a professionally licensed (where required) contractor to install your new Milgard windows and doors.

  • Read and fully understand ALL manufacturer’s instructions prior to beginning the installation. Failure to follow proper installation instructions may result in the denial of warranty claims for operational and performance problems.
  • Use caution when working at elevated heights including but not limited to ladders and scaffolding.
  • It is the responsibility of whoever installs these products to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to commencing installation.
  • Do not work alone and use safe lifting techniques. Two or more people may be required to lift. Use a reasonable amount of people with enough strength to lift, carry and install to avoid injury and/or damage to the products.
  • Use caution when handling glass. Broken or cracked glass can cause serious injury.
  • Wear protective gear (safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, etc…)
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

Exterior Vinyl Finishes

Stucco Tape Guidelines

Regarding Milgard painted vinyl and/or finishes on fiberglass window and patio doors, please use ECHOtape CLW6059 light grey and review the following Stucco Taping Guidelines related to product installation.

Fasteners

Fasteners must be made of corrosion resistant materials and compatible with the material they will penetrate. They should be sized appropriately to secure the window/door. Secure the full perimeter of the product with the minimum equivalent of 6d fasteners. Fasteners should be placed at 12" to 16" centers for standard construction. Nail one corner first, then re-check window unit for level before nailing opposite corner. Fastening at the corners should be within 10 inches and no closer than 3 inches in each direction from every corner.

Insulation

There are multiple forms of insulation that can be placed between the window and the rough opening, (i.e. fiberglass batting, pipe wrap, etc.) If Insulation foam is to be used around window/door frames, it must be of the low expansion type that meets AAMA 812 Voluntary Practice for Assessment of Single Component Aerosol Expanding Polyurethane Foams for Sealing Rough Openings of Fenestration Installations. CAUTION: Any window/door defect that can be traced to foam bowing, distorting or deformation of the window or door frame, whether it meets AAMA 812 or not, will not be considered a product warranty issue.
